Mialoquo, on the Little Tennessee River in eastern Tennessee, was a Cherokee settlement built on a place with far older human use. Rose Island nearby saw seasonal occupation by hunter-gatherers as early as the Middle Archaic period and later Woodland use, while Mialoquo itself shows Mississippian activity and an eighteenth-century Cherokee village, likely formed in part by refugees from towns destroyed in 1761. It appeared on Henry Timberlake’s 1761 map and by the Revolutionary era was led by Dragging Canoe. In 1776, after failed peace talks, Colonel William Christian destroyed Mialoquo. Later excavations uncovered Cherokee buildings and thousands of artifacts before the site was submerged by Tellico Lake.
