Colonel John Hendy, remembered by his fellow citizens as a Revolutionary officer, a brave soldier, a faithful citizen, and an honest man, died March 15, 1840, aged 82 years, 6 months, and 12 days. He was one of the oldest settlers and the first white man who ever raised a crop of corn in the Valley of the Chemung. Polly Baker, wife of Colonel John Hendy, died January 20, 1828, aged 69 years.
