Established in 1783 from a modified grist mill, the Phoenix Iron and Steel Works was the site of many metalworking firsts in America, including the rolling of iron nails, structural shapes, and beams, as well as the invention and production of the spiral wrapped wrought iron Griffen gun and the hollow wrought iron Phoenix column.
