On land donated in 1868 by the Liberty Masonic Lodge, A.J. Lewis designed and built a Confederate monument whose shaft bears the names of 279 Amite County Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. Dedicated in 1871, it was the first such monument erected in the state and among the first in the nation.
