On April 29, 1863, during the Jones-Imboden Raid, Confederate cavalry attacked Fairmont. Parts of the 106th NY Volunteers, along with militia and townsmen, mounted a strong but futile defense against overwhelming numbers. Gen. Jones's men blew up the railroad bridge, looted stores, and fired various buildings, notably destroying the personal library of Gov. Pierpont.
