This area of 1600 acres, habitat of the last surviving herd in California of Roosevelt Elk, was established as a memorial to conservationist, author, and anthropologist Madison Grant, a founder of the Save-the-Redwoods League, by De Forest Grant, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Archer M. Huntington, the New York Zoological Society, the Boone and Crockett Club, the National Audubon Society, the American Wildlife Foundation, the Save-the-Redwoods League, and the California State Park Commission.
