Redwood National and State Parks on northern California’s coast unite one national park with three state parks in a jointly managed system spanning about 139,000 acres. The protected landscape preserves nearly half of the remaining old-growth coast redwood forest, along with undeveloped shoreline, waterways, prairie, and temperate rainforest habitat for species such as Chinook salmon, northern spotted owl, and Steller’s sea lion. Indigenous peoples including the Yurok, Tolowa, Chilula, Karuk, and Wiyot have longstanding ties here, with evidence of habitation reaching back at least 8,500 years. The parks grew from a long conflict between logging and conservation and now emphasize both protection and ecological restoration.
