A large group of men was formed here, including one of the largest groups, the 24th Mississippi Infantry, Company A. Known as Confederate soldiers, they were common men with uncommon valor in war who fought for their homes, families, and a constitutional government, and most were early settlers of Greene County. The men of Company A left Greene County under the command of Captain Henry Roberts and were known as the Gaines Warriors. Greene County veterans of the Civil War are honored by name.
