William H. Seward, born 1801 and died 1872, resided in this house from 1824 to 1872. He served as New York Governor, United States Senator, and Secretary of State in the cabinets of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He was the leading figure in the purchase of Alaska.
