On June 6th, 1944, the 299th Combat Engineers were among the first troops deployed on D Day in the Normandy invasion. Their mission was to clear the beach defenses. With no cover and under heavy defensive fire, they sustained heavy casualties. The men completed the mission, helping allow the successful invasion of Europe.
