Union Church was founded in 1850, and its building was erected on land donated by member George Wurts. The church building stood one fourth mile from Union Civil War Camp Swiegert. Its original membership included frontier families named Biggs, Bonzo, Brammer Chinn, Cochran, Collins, Evans, Fisher, Franz, Gilmore, Harris, Heaberlin, Holt, Jacobs, Justice, Meade, Meeks, Mowery, McCarty, Ramey, Savage, Snoddy, Spradlin, Stafford, Walker, Wurts, and Young. That original membership was formed by the consolidation of small groups from organized churches in other areas during the period 1850-1860.
