Nez Perce National Forest spans about 4,000,000 acres in west-central Idaho, reaching the Montana line and adjoining several other national forests within the interior Northwest’s mountainous landscape. Established on July 1, 1908, from parts of the Bitterroot and Weiser national forests, it later expanded in 1934 with land from Selway National Forest. In 2012 it was administratively joined with Clearwater National Forest as the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. Its mountains, valleys, and wilderness areas support abundant wildlife and highlight the region’s remoteness and ecological importance. The forest also drew wider attention after two people disappeared there in 2018 during and around the filming of Gold Rush.
