A cinder cone developed from a series of continuous mild volcanic explosions that piled debris on the surface surrounding a volcanic vent. Numerous cinder cones lie on the Cedar City Ranger District, and many are visible from the highway. The lava flows here are very young, 1,000-5,000 years old, and they came from vents rather than a central volcano. Many landforms are associated with the lava flows, including lava tubes, cinder cones, sink holes, and craters.
