Prince William Forest Park is protected by the National Park Service to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations. Its conservation tradition reaches back to the establishment of the Chopawamsic Recreation Demonstration Area in the 1930s. The Civilian Conservation Corps built roads, trails, cabins, and other facilities there. Since then, other groups and volunteers have helped support the park's conservation legacy, and generations of Americans have escaped to this oasis of rolling forested hills.
