Tanner Trail

Tanner Trail is a steep, lightly maintained backcountry descent from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park to the Colorado River at Tanner Rapids. Its route follows an older corridor that began as an ancient Anasazi and Hopi path to the river and was later improved in the nineteenth century by prospector Seth Tanner to reach his copper mine. Crossing the plateau and dropping through major rock layers into Tanner Canyon, it is known as one of the South Rim’s most demanding routes because of its length, exposure, scarce water, and hazards such as heat, flash flooding, loose footing, and dangerous river conditions. The canyon is also linked to frontier legends.
