As railroad lines expanded through U.S., conflict occurred between competing lines. Michigan Central Railroad, with track in Porter County since 1851, briefly defied state militia and court orders in 1874 to allow Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to cross its track. The crossing was built at Willow Creek Station.
