Lamesteer National Wildlife Refuge is an 800-acre refuge in eastern Montana established to protect migratory bird habitat around Lamesteer Reservoir. It is unusual within the refuge system because it exists entirely as an easement on privately owned land, conserved through cooperation between the landowners and the U.S. government. The refuge and reservoir were named for Lame Steer Creek. Lamesteer has no on-site staff and is administered from Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge. In 2007, a management plan proposed removing Lamesteer from the National Wildlife Refuge System and relinquishing the easement to the current landowners.
