Lake of the Ozarks State Park on the Grand Glaize Arm in Missouri is the state’s largest park and preserves a long stretch of public shoreline on a lake otherwise largely privately owned. Its modern development began in 1934 as a National Park Service Recreational Demonstration Area, part of a federal effort to convert sub-marginal farmland into public recreation land after the Osage River was impounded by Bagnell Dam. Civilian Conservation Corps camps built many of its early roads, camps, buildings, and beach facilities. Today it combines beaches, trails, campsites, cabins, caverns, and an airport with surviving CCC structures and historic districts recognized in 1985.
