Chestnut Creek Wetlands Natural Area Preserve in Floyd County, Virginia, protects 244 acres of uncommon wetland habitat bordered by upland northern hardwood forest. Its open, water-influenced ground, dominated largely by sedges and grasses instead of trees and shrubs, supports several rare species in a landscape long shaped by farming and grazing. Higher slopes contain beech, birch, and maple. Acquired through a voter-approved Virginia state bond and a United States Fish and Wildlife Service recovery grant, the property is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. It is managed chiefly for conservation, with no public access improvements and visits only by prior arrangement.
