Lipscomb Union Church has served this community since the early 1900s. J.W. Arthur established the town of Lipscomb in 1886, and by the next year it was the county seat. Lipscomb soon had several stores, a post office, and a newspaper. In 1908, residents organized the non-denominational church to meet the community’s spiritual needs, and the Rev. George A. McKee became its first pastor. Early congregants met in a one-room wooden building erected by area residents. A 1917 tornado damaged the building and partly shook it off its foundation, but members quickly repaired it. Over the years, they continued to give time, energy, and funds for repairs, additions, and improvements to the worship facilities and to other responsibilities aiding the church and community. Members also served Lipscomb through auxiliaries such as Ladies Aid and the Crusaders youth group, supported international relief work, and worked with nearby rural churches. Although Lipscomb’s population remained low throughout the 20th century, the church continued to meet regularly and remained a vital spiritual presence for the town and county.
