Brigadier General William Irvine

Irish born and educated in medicine, William Irvine practiced in Carlisle until the Revolutionary War. He led a Pennsylvania regiment in important campaigns. In 1781, Washington chose him to command the western department, headquartered at Fort Pitt. He later headed the Pennsylvania militia in quelling the Whiskey Rebellion.
