Mount Chual is a prominent summit in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, about ten miles west of Morgan Hill and near Loma Prieta. As the range’s third highest peak, it is also a source area for several tributaries of Llagas Creek on its southern and eastern slopes. Its name appeared as Picacho de Chual on an 1848 Mexican-era map of New Almaden; chual is Mexican Spanish for goosefoot, referring to Chenopodium album, and derives from the Nahuatl word tzoalli. Since 1965 the summit has hosted a radio communications facility, and the peak and surrounding land are now protected under the ownership of the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority.
