The Gemini Giant is a thirty-foot fiberglass roadside statue in Wilmington, Illinois, closely tied to historic U.S. Route 66 and the Space Age styling that made it one of Illinois’s best-known Route 66 landmarks. Originally a standard Muffler Man bought in 1960 for a local restaurant, it was remade as a helmeted astronaut with a silver rocket when the business became the Launching Pad, and a local school contest gave it its name. Standing there from 1965 to 2024, it became a familiar stop for travelers. After the restaurant closed, the statue was auctioned, acquired for preservation, restored, and installed at South Island Park in 2024.
