Briscoe Mounds in Channahon, Illinois, on the north edge of the Des Plaines River, is the largest mound site in northern Illinois and a protected historic place. Its two earthen mounds were built between 1200 and 1500 AD during the Mississippian Period, tying the site to the Midwest’s long mound-building tradition. Later named for the Briscoe family, the property drew archaeological attention through surveys in 1938 and 1940, which identified distinctive pottery. Excavations in 1964 uncovered sixteen bodies, confirming the mounds’ role as an important burial site. Added to the National Register in 1978, it preserves valuable evidence of Mississippian life and burial practices.
