Dedicated on August 18, 1983, Shelter Cove Harbor Community’s World’s Largest Figurative Sundial features a more-than-one-ton, twice life-sized bronze statue of Neptune, cast at Johnsons Atelier in Princeton, NJ. Conceived and designed by local sculptor Wayne Edwards as the centerpiece for Shelter Cove Marina, the sea god’s upraised trident serves as the pointer for the elevated sundial, which is 26 feet in diameter. The sun strikes the shaft of the trident, and the resulting shadow falls on the base to indicate the time, intersecting with the month and hour of the day. Neptune, long immortalized by naval fleets and mariners as god and king of the ocean, serves as the focal point of the sundial and marina community. Greenwood Development Corporation president John Davis and developer Jim Self financed Neptune, and Bob Onorato masterminded the project while simultaneously developing Shelter Cove and Palmetto Dunes.
