Honeymoon Island State Park occupies a barrier island across St. Joseph Sound from Dunedin, with 385 acres of land, 2,400 acres of submerged area, and about 4 miles of beach. Once part of the Tocobaga homeland, the island later became a newlywed retreat in the early 1940s, when Hog Island was renamed and dotted with honeymoon huts. A large residential development proposed after a causeway was built in 1964 failed, and Florida acquired the island in the 1970s before establishing the state park in 1981. Now Florida’s most-visited state park, it is valued for beaches, trails, birdlife, and rich coastal habitats.
