Anclote Keys Light stands on Anclote Key, the largest of the Anclote Keys off Florida’s Gulf Coast. Built in 1887 as a brown skeletal square pyramidal lighthouse with a black lantern, it guided mariners from the late nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth century under a series of keepers. Automation in 1952 ended staffed operation, and repeated vandalism afterward disrupted the light. The Coast Guard deactivated it in 1984 after determining it was no longer needed for navigation. Later transferred to the State of Florida and included in Anclote Key Preserve State Park, the lighthouse was restored by 2003 and relit with a reproduction fourth-order Fresnel lens.
