Rock Dove Cave, a large cave in San Antonio discovered in January 2013 during housing development near the Ridge at Lookout Canyon, is considered by experts the fifth largest cave in Bexar County. Found by two local boys exploring the construction site, it quickly became the center of debate over how to balance suburban growth with preservation. As the subdivision moved forward, entrances were covered or sealed, and the cave suffered damage from trenching, weather exposure, and amateur visitors. Scientists warned that further harm could destroy important evidence about regional geology, the Edwards Aquifer, and possible endangered species.
