Friedrich Wilderness Park is a protected natural area in San Antonio on the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country, where the Balcones escarpment forms a rugged transition to the flatter lands of South Texas. Created through land donations from Norma Friedrich Ward, Wilbur Matthews, and Glen Martin, it opened in 1978 with development funded by Ward and a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant. Its steep elevation changes, high views toward downtown San Antonio, and location between city and wilderness define the landscape. The park also holds ecological importance as summer habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.
