The oldest permanent fort in Texas was called Fort Taylor in March 1846 and was later renamed in honor of Major Jacob Brown, who was killed here in May 1846. A permanent post was established in 1849. It was evacuated by Federal troops in 1861 and by Confederates in 1863, then reoccupied by United States troops from 1865 to 1906 and again in 1913.
