An estimated 60 million American bison inhabited Indiana and many other states in early America, and they have appeared on Indiana's state seal since 1801. Their migration trail, the Buffalo Trace, was used to create Indiana's first official road, and parts of that route can still be traveled today on US Route 150. In celebration of Indiana's 200 anniversary of statehood, bison were placed in communities throughout the state and painted by local artists. One bison, named Lawren, depicts important events and places in the community.
