The Penobscot River has long been a vital resource. In the 1700's it spawned numerous riverside communities, while the 1800's saw Bangor become the "lumber capital of the world" and Bucksport an international port renowned for shipbuilding. Along the Penobscot, the batteau and peavey were crafted, two inventions invaluable to the massive log drives that brought timber to the mills. More recently, water quality has improved dramatically, fostering increased recreational uses and the return of Atlantic Salmon.
