Teamsters drove wagonloads of hot, newly made charcoal to this cooling shed, where workers paid by the load delivered dumped it by removing wagon floorboards. After the charcoal cooled, it was moved and piled in the nearby stone storage house and later used as furnace fuel. Charcoal occasionally caught fire, and to salvage part of a load a teamster might pull the wagon floorboards and drop the charcoal to the ground, while during an uncontrollable fire a teamster headed his wagon straight for a stream.
