USCGC Duane, a Treasury-class Coast Guard cutter built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1935–1936, served from prewar Pacific and Bering Sea patrols to Atlantic neutrality and weather missions. After rescuing 46 survivors from the British tanker Tresillian in 1941, she spent World War II on Navy duty, escorting convoys in the Battle of the Atlantic and later serving as a combined operations and communications headquarters ship during Operation Dragoon in southern France. In the postwar years she worked ocean weather stations and later served off Vietnam before decommissioning in 1985. Sunk off Key Largo in 1987, she became an artificial reef and preserved archaeological site.
