Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain is a pre-Columbian ceremonial stone structure near the summit of Medicine Mountain in Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest. Built of local limestone, the wheel is about 80 feet across, with a circular rim, 28 spokes, and seven cairns. The surrounding Bighorn Mountains hold more than 10,000 years of cultural history, and oral traditions from several Indigenous nations regard the site as already ancient and still sacred. Known in Crow and Arapaho traditions by Indigenous names and linked to stories of vision quests and Burnt Face, it has also drawn scientific study for proposed astronomical alignments, making it important to both ceremonial tradition and debates about Indigenous astronomy.
