The Medicine Wheel, a National Historic Landmark on Medicine Mountain, is one of North America's most important and well preserved Native American sacred landscapes and has long played, and continues to play, an essential role in the lives of Native Americans. It is at least 250 years old, and Native Americans have occupied the surrounding region for more than 12,000 years, maintaining vibrant cultural practices reflected in the ancient trail system, archaeological remains, and traditional use areas within this sacred landscape. Today the site remains sacred to many different tribes across North America and beyond, with offerings left by people who have made the pilgrimage there and ceremonies that may take place on any given day.
