Founded in 1859 as Homewood Junction of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago and Erie and Pittsburgh Railroads, the community was named for ironmaker James Wood. It was incorporated in 1910. Its post office was known as Racine, Pennsylvania. Nearby are the historic Saint Cloud Hotel, Clydesdale Quarry, and Buttermilk Falls on Clarks Run.
