Underground Railroad
Rochester, Pennsylvania · James Edgar
History
6
Built in 1849, this home was once the inn and livery of Presbyterian abolitionist James Edgar. It was connected by tunnel to the Erie-Pittsburgh railroad depot, now the Merrick Art Gallery. Here, fugitives, often dressed as Underground Railroad conductors' servants, were secretly led through the tunnel to Edgar's cellar and then transferred to an available safe house.
