Titlow Beach in Tacoma, Washington, evolved from an early shoreline resort into a public waterfront park on Puget Sound near the Tacoma Narrows. After lawyer Aaron R. Titlow bought the property in 1903, the Swiss Chalet-style Hotel Hesperides opened there in 1911 and operated until 1923. The park district acquired the site in 1926, and a 1930s Works Progress Administration renovation reshaped the former lodge, which then served park staff housing for decades. The beach also functioned as a ferry landing between 1928 and 1950, with service briefly interrupted by the opening and collapse of the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Today it is known for shoreline recreation, diving, and its unusual 1963 octopus wrestling championships.
