Tacoma Chinese Reconciliation Park was created by the City of Tacoma in close collaboration with the Chinese Reconciliation Project Foundation as a cultural destination preserving the historical memory of the forceful expulsion that drove Tacoma’s Chinese population out in 1885. Intended to help heal the community from that act, its peaceful Chinese garden landscape promotes peace, healing, and reconciliation through a symbolic passage through history, from Journey to Gold Mountain and the life of early Chinese Americans to the complex conditions of the time, the Path of Expulsion, and the road to Reconciliation, alongside interpretive pathways, sculpted gardens, and the natural beauty of Commencement Bay. The Chinese Reconciliation Project Foundation, a nonprofit organization advancing civic and cultural harmony, uses the park to educate people about the expulsion, broaden understanding through education, and demonstrate how reconciliation can foster hope, inclusivity, positive change, and a more united community locally and globally.
