Las Moras Springs, a group of artesian springs at Fort Clark near Brackettville, Texas, provided the dependable water supply that led to the establishment of both the fort and the nearby settlement. Meaning “The Mulberries” in Spanish, the springs are among the largest in Texas, ranking ninth in the state and averaging about 12 to 14 million gallons of water daily. Rising from a fault over Edwards limestone at about 1,096 feet in elevation, the water fills a large walled area, with some flowing into a 300-foot swimming pool and the rest through a bypass channel before rejoining to form the headwaters of the year-round Las Moras Creek on its course toward the Rio Grande.
