On August 24, 1835, one mile northwest, the Camp Holmes Treaty was signed to guarantee peace, friendship, good hunting, and safe travel as far as the western borders of the U.S.A. To negotiate their first treaty with the government and the Civilized Indian Nations, 5000 Commanches, Wichitas, and other Plains Indians had camped here for six weeks, guarded by several hundred dragoons. The treaty was signed by Gov. Stokes of Western Ter., Gen'l Arbuckle, Supt. Armstrong, 34 Commanches, 2 Cherokees, 42 Muskogees, 31 Choctaws, 39 Osages, and 22 Quapaws, and was witnessed by R. B. Mason, Maj. of Dragoons, and others.
