Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California, grew from the original Oakland Observatory donated by Anthony Chabot in 1883 into a regional center for astronomy and science education. After serving for years as a public observatory and the Bay Area’s official timekeeping station, it moved and expanded as Oakland grew and conditions changed. A long effort to restore public access led to a new institution created through cooperation among local agencies and partners, culminating in the present facility’s opening in 2000. Today it combines exhibits, planetarium programs, and weekend public telescope viewing, continuing its educational mission with historic and modern instruments.
