Wolf Creek State Park in Shelby County covers 25,300 acres on the east side of Lake Shelbyville and is one of the region’s major public recreation areas. Known especially for its extensive camping facilities, it includes 304 Class A campsites with restrooms, showers, electricity, and picnic tables, as well as family tent areas, a group camp, an equestrian campground, and a rental cabin. The park was swept into Illinois’s 2008 budget crisis and closed on November 30, 2008, after being slated for indefinite closure under Governor Rod Blagojevich. It reopened in February 2009 under Governor Pat Quinn and continues to serve visitors on Lake Shelbyville.
