Here, on June 15, 1856, Abraham Lincoln and Anthony Thornton debated for and against freedom in the territories. This was Lincoln's initial speech that made him President and the Great Emancipator. From 1847 to 1858, during the Lincoln Circuit, he practiced law here and occupied a room in the hotel then known as Tackets Tavern.
