Walton County was the home, either through birth or short residence, of Georgia governors Wilson Lumpkin, Alfred Holt Colquitt, James S. Boynton, Henry D. McDaniel, Clifford Walker, and Richard B. Russell, Jr. Two of them, Colquitt and Russell, also became United States Senators. Richard B. Hubbard, born on a plantation in Walton County in 1836, later moved to Texas and became that state's governor.
