History

This land is the traditional territory of the Tolowa Dee-ni’. Land acknowledgements are a way people insert an awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights into everyday life, often at the beginning of ceremonies, lectures, or education guides. They can be an explicit yet limited way to recognize the history of colonialism and First Nations as well as a need for change in settler-colonial societies. Native Lands maps are for educational purposes, are imperfect, and do not represent or intend to represent official or legal boundaries of Indigenous nations; definitive boundaries should be learned from the nation.
