St. John Chrysostom Episcopal Church in Delafield is among the oldest churches still standing in Wisconsin. It was built between 1851 and 1853 in the Carpenter Gothic style, which emerged from the Gothic Revival movement. The structure closely follows the designs of distinguished church architect Richard M. Upjohn with carpentry completed by Alden Kelly and metal work by Jacob Luther. St. John Chrysostom is surmised to be the only attributed work by Upjohn in Wisconsin. Upjohn’s designs attempted to adapt Gothic elements—steeply pitched roofs, pointed arches, tracery—to traditional American wood-frame construction. Noted Episcopal clergy have served as rectors here, including Bishop Jackson Kemper and the Rev. James DeKoven. Many of Delafield’s founding families were parishioners and are buried in the church’s cemetery.
