The Waukesha Biota is a major early Silurian fossil deposit in southeastern Wisconsin, centered in Waukesha County with related material from Franklin in Milwaukee County. Preserved in the Brandon Bridge Formation, it is especially important for its exceptional survival of soft-bodied and lightly built organisms, including forms rarely seen in rocks of this age. First reported in scientific literature in 1985, it became a key source for studying early Paleozoic life beyond shells and skeletons. Its fossils, concentrated in very thin marine beds, reveal an unusual assemblage dominated by arthropods and shaped by conditions that favored organic film and phosphatic preservation while limiting scavengers.
