At Hardy, Kentucky, the old water well at the original McCoy family log cabin site is associated with Randal McCoy, patriarch of the McCoy family in the Hatfield-McCoy feud, and with a New Year's Eve 1888 attack on the cabin in which, according to Truda Williams McCoy's book The McCoy's, Alifair McCoy was shot and killed near the well after the house was set on fire and the family had exhausted its water and milk trying to stop the flames. Bob Scott, who owns the property with Rita Scott, long hoped to use water from the well to help keep the feud's history alive, and after working with Josh and Jessica Martin of Pauley Hollow Distillery in Forest Hills, Kentucky, water from the site was used to create Fuel of the Feud Moonshine. Scott and Ron McCoy, a great-great-great-grandson of Randall McCoy, both connected moonshine to the heritage of the feud region, recalling that mountain moonshiners made homemade brew for personal use and occasions such as election day at the Hog Trial in 1882, while Pauley Hollow Distillery, Pike County's first legal distillery, began making moonshine in 2016 and also started aging bourbon and rye whiskey for later sale.
